Q. My employees regularly work outdoors. With summer coming, what should I do to protect them?
A. Summer is right around the corner. Those of us in southern states are already seeing temperatures in the 90s. The first step your company should take is to review OSHA’s guidelines regarding heat-related illnesses. Essentially, OSHA calls for more frequent breaks, ready and easy access to water, and working in shaded areas if possible. Additionally, OSHA provides employers with training kits and information to help employees and their supervisors recognize the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Additionally, employers should ensure employees have access to sunscreen and insect repellent. It’s also a good idea to establish and review procedures for dealing with inclement weather (especially when lightening is present) and wild animals (snakes, bears, etc.) they may encounter during the course of their work.
